Hello, I’m Dorte

Hello, I’m Dorte Hansen. I live in Hanstholm, a small town on Denmark’s west coast, and I have always been happiest with something growing nearby. My garden gives me a reason to get outside in every sort of weather — including the very Danish kind.

The plot is 860 square metres, with a modest 9 square metre greenhouse tucked among the beds. I grow vegetables, fruit and berries because I love the taste, the rhythm of the seasons and the feeling of bringing something home that I planted myself.

I am interested in self-sufficiency, but my version is gentle and practical. I grow what we enjoy eating, save a little for later and accept that a garden is never entirely under control. A good harvest is wonderful; a good lesson is useful too.

This blog is a place for the honest version of gardening: things that worked, things that did not, small harvests, favourite meals and whatever the season brings. If you are growing something of your own, I hope you will feel at home here.
